My two cents on the Teochew Dear You saga. The return of dialects will dilute the thrust and importance of the Chinese language, bearing in mind that Mandarin is the spoken component, whilst the written script is common for all.
School children already have a tough time managing both English & Chinese languages. Unlike Malay say, which is Romanised.
Secondly, China' ascension economically and militarily is astounding. The next world's superpower ? Even HK schools today are steadfast in the transmission of the Chinese language over the dialect, Cantonese. The colonialist British' Divide-Rule Policy.
The lingua franca of about 2 billions speakers across the world and even the UN.
Don't be stupid to lose out over emotional reasons.
Did we know that in Malaysia today, the privately funded vernacular (Chinese) primarily schools are filled with some 30% non-Chinese, just to study in Mandarin.
